MacDonald Looking To Prove Himself This Year

Shaun MacDonald says he needs to prove his quality this year in front of the new managerial staff.

It could be make or break for the midfielder this season as he'll need to prove that he can offer us something at this level before his contract expires next June.

The 21 year-old has been involved quite a lot in the pre-season friendlies as Sousa is keen to see what he can offer to the team. He's played an attacking role and it looks like the manager will play a 4-5-1 formation with an attacking midfielder supporting the lone-striker. The other 2 central midfielders are likely to operate a more defensive role under Sousa compared to Martinez's system last year.

With Jordi Lopez likely to be on the bench and Darren Pratley and Ferrie Bodde out injured, tomorrow could be Shaun MacDonald's big chance to impress and earn himself a regular first team place.

MacDonald told the Evening Post:

'I need to be involved a lot more this season, particularly with a new gaffer in charge,'

'I want to prove to him I am good enough to play for the club.

'Under Kenny I had quite a few games and he said a lot of good things about me. Roberto gave me a few chances, which I thought I did all right in, but I didn't get a consistent run.

'Now Paulo is here, and I want to get into his plans early on and impress in this new position.

'I have to protect the midfield two, get the ball off them and if the ball gets to the striker I need to be supporting him.

'I am more of an attacking player and I love to get on the ball and show the supporters and staff what I can do.

'With me it is about confidence, and the more game-time I get the better my confidence is.

I'm not convinced he's right option for that attacking midfield role but we don't have anyone else so i'll back him all the way. on a good way Shaun has quality, he just needs to show that more often.
