Championship Q & A: Newcastle United

Championship Q & A: Newcastle United

Mehzeb Chowdhury from Vital Newcastle United shares his thoughts ahead of the new Championship season.

1. Your name and Club Supported

Mehzeb Chowdhury, Newcastle United

2. Your League Position last season

18th Premier League (relegated)

3. Your Prediction For this Season's Position Finish

5th

4. Transfers In (rumoured)

James Chester, Stephen Darby, Danny Drinkwater, Tommy Spurr, Mark Beevers, Jonjo Shelvey, Jermaine Beckford

5. Transfers Out (rumoured)

Joey Barton, Damien Duff, Sebastien Bassong, Habib Beye, Obafemi Martins, Fabricio Coloccini, Jonas Gutierrez, Xisco

6. Have you made enough signings for the new season? Are they the right signings?

Until the sale of the club goes through there can really be no transfer activity, but it appears that once a new owner comes through there will be a significant flurry of happenings at St James' Park. The word 'right' as far as signings go is key. Over the last decade so many wrong decisions have been made that it is virtually impossible to see past the failings. However, we look forward to the new season, and hopefully, the right signings will arrive, not for extravangant prices, but with heart and if we're lucky with some untapped talent.

7. What are the expectations amongst the fans for this year?

No expectations whatsoever. The fans know that the team are in shambles, and nothing can be expected from the current lot. Major changes have to be made, and soon. If we are to reveal, a play-off place would be preferred by all fans, and that is what actually may transpire come the end of the season.

8. Key player(s)

Steven Taylor, Nicky Butt, Kevin Nolan, Steve Harper, Danny Guthrie, Andy Carroll

9. Youngsters to watch-out for

Nile Ranger, Ryan Donaldson, Tamas Kadar, Haris Vuckic, Samuel Adjei, Kazenga Lua Lua

10. Your thoughts ahead of the new Championship campaign, are you confident or worried going into the new season? How do you think your year will pan out?

Well, the impending sale of the club has dragged on for over two months, and frankly we're all a bit tired of the non-activity. Pre-season has been mediocre at best with Chris Hughton stepping in as caretaker once again. It does not look very good at the moment, but we're hopeful that once a new owner comes in, a good manager would be installed, and a few signings would come in. Strengthening the squad is key for the new season. It will be tough. We know that all too well. There will no 'storming' the Championship this season, no Toon fan is even thinking otherwise at this point. We all want the uncertain clouds to clear so that the future can be seen. We have some talented youngsters who can step in and perform if needed, and some of the reserve team players are beginning to blossom. A play-off position is what we want, and maybe scrape through to the Premiership.

11. Predict the Top 2 and Play-off winner and the 3 clubs to go down

Top 2: Sheffield United, Ipswich Town
Play-off Winner: Newcastle United
Teams to go down: Scunthorpe United, Plymouth Argyle, Derby County
