Wigan Athletic Sign Scotland For £2m

Jason Scotland is set to join Wigan Athletic after Swansea City accepted their £2m bid for the striker.

Losing our top goalscorer was inevitable really as the Trinidad and Tobago international expressed a keen desire to leave the club to play in the Premiership.

Following Burnley and Hull City's attempts at landing the striker, Roberto Martinez followed with a £2m fee and Scotland will team up again with the former Swansea manager.

Chairman Huw Jenkins told the Evening Post:

"Obviously we are disappointed to lose Jason,"

"But I think it was inevitable considering his age and his burning desire to play in the Premier League while he has the chance.

"He will obviously be teaming up with Roberto again, but even if we hadn't had a change of manager I believe Jason would have moved up a league anyway.

"He made no secret of the fact that he wanted to play in the Premier League and everyone at the club believes he has earned that chance.

"To score 53 goals in two seasons says it all and on behalf of everyone connected with Swansea City I would like to thank him for his efforts.

Speculation of his move to the Latics grew at the beginning of the week when it was reported that he didn't join the rest of the squad in Portugal for the pre-season training camp. Although Jenkins said the real reason was because he had an injury, the rest of us had suspicions that a move was very likely.

Jenkins has also ensured fans that money will be given to Paulo Sousa to spend on strengthening the squad. Some fans have shown a concern regarding the lack of signings but the chairman added:

"The fans can be reassured that the manager and his staff are looking to strengthen as soon as possible,"

"I can also assure our fans that all the funds received from the sale of Jason will be reinvested into the club by Paulo. We will endeavour to do that before the season starts."
