Speed Will Cost £500,000?

The Mirror are reporting today that Swansea City would have to pay £500,000 to Sheffield United if they wanted to appoint Gary Speed as their new manager.

The player-coach at Bramall Lane has 1 year left on his contract.

"Dennis Wise is the last person I would have as manager!"
The former Welsh international is set to have talks with chairman Huw Jenkins on Monday about the possibility of replacing Roberto Martinez.

Swansea City will also speak to other candidates. Other names in the frame are former Watford boss Aidy Boothroyd who has declared an interest in the job according to Huw Jenkins.

He told BBC Sport that he is looking to push things on next week:

'As things stand, there's some good people who have applied,'

'We are going to push on next week and get cracking.

'We will try our best [to do something by the end of the week] and see where we get to.'

Due to the on-going saga regarding Martinez's delayed move to Wigan, little has been reported about who our next manager could be. Gary Speed is the only potential candidate who's been mentioned recently. Rumours suggest that Gus Poyet and Dennis Wise have applied for the job.

"I don't think Speed was officially a coach there, Sam Ellis had that job, but Speed was learning the ropes whilst injured. They bought him as a player last season for 250k. How are they trading him, as a player or as a coach, one is a fee the other is compensation? For a 40 year old player it seems a high price, for a coach he wasn't on the books as a one, so how can they claim compensation?"

If that's true, you will get him for absolute PEANUTS! I wouldn't let him go for under double that figure. Great prospect as coach / manager. Intelligent, articulate and starting to do a really valuable job at Bramall Lane, and probably still has a year left as an influential mid fielder.

I think Gary Speed has played his last league game, whether he comes to Swansea or stays at Sheffield United. £500,000 for a 40 (will be 5 weeks into new season) year old player is a bit high. 12 months to go on his contract is as a player, not as a coach.

Willow....I hope you are right and he stays at Bramall Lane, believe me, Swans will be the loser. And his contract at SUFC is as a PLAYER, weather or not you want him as a coach not player is totally irrelevant. He is over the operation, has been playing behind closed doors and only didn't play in the play off final because it would have been very unfair on the players who got us that far. If you miss him at such a give away price - as player OR coach - you will regret it.
