Martinez To Become New Wigan Boss Tomorrow

Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan expects to confirm Roberto Martinez as their manager tomorrow.

Swansea City reluctantly allowed the Latics to have talks with Martinez as they took into account the Spaniard's wishes to join the Premiership club.

"I can't imagine Swansea City without Roberto but we all have to move on!"
A compensation fee of around 2m is thought to have been agreed and Martinez will sit down with Wigan's Chief Executive Brenda Spencer to discuss the move. Dave Whelan told Sky Sports News that it'll be completed within 24 hours. He also believes that Roberto is keen to take 3 or 4 of his back room staff with him. They are likely to be his assistant Graeme Jones, goalkeeping coach Inaka Bergara, fitness coach Oscar Brau and possibly head scout Kevin Reeves.

Not only back room staff, but the 35 year-old could well be interested in taking some of the players with him too, such as Jason Scotland, Ferrie Bodde, Angel Rangel and loanee Jordi Gomez.

The whole saga involving Martinez with a move started on Monday when Celtic made an official approach to Swansea City about having talks to appoint the Spaniard as a replacement for Gordon Strachan.

Wigan then followed and over took them as clear favourites when Martinez indicated his desires to join them as their new boss.

There's been plenty of discussion about Martinez's imminent departure and you can join in the debate in the forum here

"No matter what lustre or gloss he (Martinez) puts on his departing speech, he has shown himself to be a man seriously lacking in principles. I have held fire on this until something concrete not listening to the rumours and heresay but as soon as he went to talk you know his heart is no longer here. Because of the manner he has left I cannot/will not wish him luck for the future and hope he sinks without trace now."

i hope so too james, i hope he fails at wigan but i don't think he will. he's going to leave us strugging
GThomas

lathamwafc
Why not take the Spanish interpreters too just to well and truly leave us in the... !!??
kentishjack
We won't need them anyway when they all leave us
GThomas
he can go but he can leave the players here

Personally, while Martinez seems an excellent manager, he would havebenefitted from another year with the Swans - he owed you that much for plucking him from obscurity. Tough luck that Wigan needed a manager as there weren't many clubs he's have left you for. Swansea's and the Championship's loss.

Here is hoping that HJ put a "hands off" clause into the compensation deal to prevent Wigan from moving in on any of our players.
bakaryu
hope so he failing wigan and stay swansea city !!! if he move to wigan them swansea city team will be down and hope so if look great find new manger !!
HD-Eagles
Looks certain that he will now leave. Will he be taking Graeme Jones with him? If not, will he stand a chance of taking over as No.1?

The only other thing is that at least we know we'll get a few million for each of them, I think it's safe to say Huw won't let them go cheap.

well its all about damage limitation now we had a good set up at swansea finaly, but lets hope martinez will do one right thing and not make it imposible for us to continue like we are by takin every1.
james,jackarmy
There's no reason he wont come back in for players he rates as Premiership quality. Its obvious his love for the club was all lies so i fully expect us to have a HUGE battle to keep the likes of Bodde & Rangel!!!

Steve copell is having talks with the club this weekend according "to press"
mumblesjack98
i think its awful that you guys are leaving comments saying you wont renew your seaon ticket. do you support the manager or the football club!?
bluebirdlewis
BTW.........If the #1 team in wales was in this predicament you would leave comments like this. HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHA! Your going down
bluebirdlewis
your not the num 1 team in wales and we wouldnt bother wasting our time writing on cardiff vital.
james,jackarmy
there would be no point james, no one reads cardiff vital.
GThomas
mumblesjack where does it say that steve coppell is in talks with us?
GThomas
I must admit I'm reading all this with a slight tear in my eye. A major pity that Roberto is leaving us, afterall he does have history there, and background staff, well it's all part of the management 'team'. What does though both anger and concern me is this idea of taking the players too, now that sucks bigtine. He's not just waving goodbye but kicking us in the teeth while he's leaving.
OriginalXOR
Further to my last comment, I will certainly wish RM all the best for the future BUT ONLY if he leaves our players where they are. Please....
OriginalXOR
i agree with u originalxor but the problem is fair enough if RMdin wana stay and if he made it clear all along but managers dont jus go now they pretty much pull the clubs apart takin assistants and players i really think this is far from over.
james,jackarmy
I couldn't possibly wish him all the best after the way he has treated us. He could gone about it in a way that made us more understanding why he left but he hasn't. He's a Judas and a disgrace and I hope he fails miserably at Wigan and takes them down, I'd love to swap places with them
GThomas
i din mean that i wish him all the best mayb if he hadnt lied and made his intentions clear but they treat you like idiots and think bout themselves not thinkin that the fans have supported the club all there lives and we,r the ones left in the lurch then they make sum s**ty excuse expecting you to undrstand y they s**t on us.
james,jackarmy
I was referring to originalxor james. he's gone about the whole really bad and treated us like ****. he's left us in the ***** and now he'll really take the ***** by taking everyone with him. again i fully agree with you james
GThomas
