Martinez To Become New Wigan Boss Tomorrow

Martinez To Become New Wigan Boss Tomorrow

Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan expects to confirm Roberto Martinez as their manager tomorrow.

Swansea City reluctantly allowed the Latics to have talks with Martinez as they took into account the Spaniard's wishes to join the Premiership club.

"I can't imagine Swansea City without Roberto but we all have to move on!"
A compensation fee of around £2m is thought to have been agreed and Martinez will sit down with Wigan's Chief Executive Brenda Spencer to discuss the move. Dave Whelan told Sky Sports News that it'll be completed within 24 hours. He also believes that Roberto is keen to take 3 or 4 of his back room staff with him. They are likely to be his assistant Graeme Jones, goalkeeping coach Inaka Bergara, fitness coach Oscar Brau and possibly head scout Kevin Reeves.

Not only back room staff, but the 35 year-old could well be interested in taking some of the players with him too, such as Jason Scotland, Ferrie Bodde, Angel Rangel and loanee Jordi Gomez.

The whole saga involving Martinez with a move started on Monday when Celtic made an official approach to Swansea City about having talks to appoint the Spaniard as a replacement for Gordon Strachan.

Wigan then followed and over took them as clear favourites when Martinez indicated his desires to join them as their new boss.

There's been plenty of discussion about Martinez's imminent departure and you can join in the debate in the forum here

"No matter what lustre or gloss he (Martinez) puts on his departing speech, he has shown himself to be a man seriously lacking in principles. I have held fire on this until something concrete not listening to the rumours and heresay but as soon as he went to talk you know his heart is no longer here. Because of the manner he has left I cannot/will not wish him luck for the future and hope he sinks without trace now."

Personally, while Martinez seems an excellent manager, he would havebenefitted from another year with the Swans - he owed you that much for plucking him from obscurity. Tough luck that Wigan needed a manager as there weren't many clubs he's have left you for. Swansea's and the Championship's loss.

Here is hoping that HJ put a "hands off" clause into the compensation deal to prevent Wigan from moving in on any of our players.

Looks certain that he will now leave. Will he be taking Graeme Jones with him? If not, will he stand a chance of taking over as No.1?
