Wigan Put Off By Martinez Compensation Fee
The Guardian report that Wigan Athletic could be put off trying to appoint Roberto Martinez as their new manager because of the large compensation fee involved.
|"He has a £1.2m release clause in his contract so I would say the £2m is rubbish."|
According to a Wigan source, Wigan have been put off by the fee they've been quoted and said:
'We made an approach to Swansea but they were asking for an absolutely nonsensical sum of money'
'Roberto was our number one target but we are now drawing up a list of other targets we want to talk to.'
This by no means rules out Wigan's interest in Roberto Martinez and Celtic still look front-runners to appoint the Spaniard this month.
Wigan chairman Dave Whelan (pictured) is a big admirer of Roberto and he remains top of his wanted list to replace Steve Bruce, who has agreed terms to take over at Sunderland.
Swansea City eagerly await news of the 35 year-old's decision, which we should know within 48 hours following his return from Ibiza.
