Wigan Put Off By Martinez Compensation Fee

Wigan Put Off By Martinez Compensation Fee

The Guardian report that Wigan Athletic could be put off trying to appoint Roberto Martinez as their new manager because of the large compensation fee involved.

by ystradjack
"He has a £1.2m release clause in his contract so I would say the £2m is rubbish."
No sources close to the Swans have confirmed what the compensation fee is but a number of reports today suggest the value is around £2m.

According to a Wigan source, Wigan have been put off by the fee they've been quoted and said:

'We made an approach to Swansea but they were asking for an absolutely nonsensical sum of money'

'Roberto was our number one target but we are now drawing up a list of other targets we want to talk to.'

This by no means rules out Wigan's interest in Roberto Martinez and Celtic still look front-runners to appoint the Spaniard this month.

Wigan chairman Dave Whelan (pictured) is a big admirer of Roberto and he remains top of his wanted list to replace Steve Bruce, who has agreed terms to take over at Sunderland.

Swansea City eagerly await news of the 35 year-old's decision, which we should know within 48 hours following his return from Ibiza.

even if they did offer two million its alot for a club like ours but its still not worth losing roberto the one man who,s given us hope of the premiership.

SWEP reports today that Martinez contacted them from holiday and denied links with Celtic. I think it's just a usual media fuss. Martinez has got a job undone here and he'll want to finish it first before moving on to the higher level where he definitely belongs though.
