Vital Swansea Season 08/09 Review - Part 2

SEPTEMBER 2008

After a bright and promising start to the season in the Championship, September failed to live up to the same standards following an international break and we ended the month in 15th place, dropping 8 places.

Whereas we lost just 1 in 6 in August, we only managed 1 League win during September, as well as that though we won early bragging rights over our rivals Cardiff City for knocking them out of the Carling Cup.

We kicked off the month with a visit to Crystal Palace which ended in a 2-0 defeat for the Swans.

Fans were pretty confident of a good result at Selhurst Park:

2 goals either side of the break gave Palace a comfortable home win as Watson and Carle got on the scoresheet.

The Swans then had 3 consecutive home games to bounce back from their second defeat of the season, starting off with a game against Derby just a few days later on Tuesday night.

Swansea dominated most of the match in front a decent 14,000 crowd but we found ourselves a goal down during the second half as Pearson netted following a one-on-one with De Vries.

Ashley Williams nodded home a solid header though to share the points.

We had to rescue a point again the following Saturday as Ferrie Bodde scored a last minute equaliser to deny Burnley.

A few days later, it was the derby, for the first time in 9 years, and it was the first of 3 this season. McPhail got sent off, and that wasn't the first time he was shown red against the Swans. Gomez fired in a low free-kick to give us a fantastic win against the Bluebirds.

Artur Krysiak added another nationality to the squad; the Polish keeper arriving on loan from Birmingham City. Watford was not the best, nor the worst possible draw in the Fourth Round of the Carling Cup following the Cardiff win. Reading then gave us a reality check, brushing aside an out of sorts Swansea, thrashing us 4-0.

The month ended on a high though, with a unconvincing performance at Preston yielding three priceless points. Bodde scored what can only be described as a scorcher from 40 yards and Gomez made sure of the points.

September Summary:

Despite a disappointing opening day defeat, the Swans re-grouped, learnt a valuable lesson and enjoyed the rest of August by going unbeaten. With 2 League Wins and a cup win against a Premiership side it was a fantastic start to the season.

OCTOBER 2008

October saw a big improvement from the Swans with just 1 defeat in 5, and that was a 2-1 loss away at table-toppers Wolves.

Mick McCarthy's side got revenge that day following our superb start to October, we beat them 3-1 at the Liberty Stadium. Jason Scotland was on fire that day, netting a brace with Gomez scoring the other.

Yet again an untimely international break stopped the Swans from getting any sort of prolonged run going, and when Roberto Martinez's men were back in action they were cruelly denied a third consecutive win as Ipswich claimed a debateable late equaliser to pinch a 2-2 draw at Portman Road.

QPR came to South Wales as one of the richest clubs in the country. They left after being given a footballing lesson but somehow escaping with a point. Iain Dowie didn't escape though, losing his job after the result.

The game will always be remembered for the appearance of Alan Tate in a goalkeepers shirt. Dorus de Vries was stretchered off injured with a facial injury that would keep him out for weeks, and with no replacement 'keeper on the bench, Tatey stepped in and kept a clean sheet!

Artur Krysiak made his debut in a convincing 3-0 home victory over Southampton as the Swans really began to find their rhythm at this level, with Ferrie Bodde consistently proving why he is one of the best central midfielders at this level. Dimi Konstantopolous became the third goalkeeping option at Martinez's disposal when he joined on loan from Coventry, but he watched from the sidelines as City were unfortunate to come away from Molineux with nothing.

October Summary:

A big improvement from the Swans and October couldn't have started better for us, with an awesome win and performance against the top side.
