Swansea Willing to Pay £1m Plus For Gomez
Swansea City are willing to pay more than £1million for on loan midfielder Jordi Gomez, and could triple their record transfer fee paid.
Recently, the News of the World reported that Martinez recommended that the club pay £1.2m for the Espanyol youngster, but chairman Huw Jenkins denied they had made such a bid.
However, it seems now that the Swans are willing to pay in excess of £1m for a player who in his first season at the club won the Official Supporters' Player of the Year award.
The Swans haven't been able to have proper talks with Espanyol over a move because Gomez's future could well depend on whether or not they manage to maintain their top flight status in Spain's La Liga.
They looked certain for relegation not long ago but an excellent run of form has seen them rise up to 14th, 6 places away from the bottom.
Swansea City have already paid the club £200,000 to sign him on a season-long loan and at least a further £1m could be paid to sign him on a permanent basis.
With Espanyol looking likely now to stay in La Liga, Swansea's chances of signing him have increased, although we'll have to compete with a number of other clubs, such as Newcastle and Celtic who have also shown a interest.
Speculation and rumours suggest that a clause was written in his loan deal that gives the Swans a first opportunity to sign him, but who knows whether that's true or not at this stage.
