Britton: 'Wellens Spat In My Face'

Leon Britton says Doncaster's Richie Wellens spat in his face during yesterday's game at the Liberty Stadium.

Our star midfielder put in yet another typical Britton performance, battling for every ball, good passing, skill and helped us maintain possession and likely Wellens was frustrated with his quality throughout the game.

During the first half, there was an incident between the two players, as Wellens accused Britton of stamping on him, before threatening to punch him and then spat in his face, Britton said:

'Wellens thought I'd stamped on him. I told him if I did I didn't mean to.

'He said he was going to punch me. I wish he had, because he spat in my face instead.

'He was very clever; he spat out of the side of his mouth so the referee didn't see it.

'It's the first time something like this has happened to me. It's a disgusting thing to do, especially from a fellow pro.

'I'm just glad I could rise above it. We came away with the three points and he eventually got sent-off.

'Their captain, Brian Stock, came up to me afterwards and apologised, but it was still not a very nice thing to happen.''

Martinez was also obviously disgusted with Wellens actions and said:

'To spit in someone's face is just not acceptable,''

'Incidents like that should never happen in football matches.

'When you step over the line, the football authorities should step in and look at players' records.

'Sean O'Driscoll (Doncaster manager) is a gentleman and their squad of players are winners in the right way.

'But what Wellens did does not represent their football club in the right manner.''
