Butler: Martinez had Harsh Words With Us

Swansea City midfielder Tom Butler reveals that boss Roberto Martinez had harsh words with the whole team during after Tuesday's defeat at Watford.

The Spaniard has always said how he likes his side to maintain their standards and to 'be themselves', but Tuesday's display at Watford was a long way off the standard of performance we've seen in recent months.

Butler got his first League start of the year, his 16th this season as he replaced Mark Gower who was rested. The other chance was Serran coming in to replace Angel Rangel at right back.

Butler said:

''The manager had harsh words with us at half-time and after the game.

'He was right — he came down on us all,''

''When the team is going good and we are passing the ball and winning that is great, but you see Manchester United go away from home and grind out 1-0 wins. That's why they are so successful.

''We have to get that kind of mentality into us where we go away and apply ourselves like we do in our home games. I think we were expecting to get the ball down, pass it and everything to be nice and easy,''

''They started much brighter and had much more fight and determination in them at the start.

''We started off waiting for things to happen. We did that earlier on in the season and we were punished.

''I think that was a wake-up call for us.

'Maybe we needed it away from home. We lost the game and we deserve the criticism.

''Performances like that, given the way we've been playing, is unacceptable. That is the last time you will see us playing like that.''

so he should have, you sometimes get the feeling martinez is mr nice guy but he can lay into his players when he needs to, shame he couldn't inspire us to a bit of comeback though.
