Jones Hits Back At Histon Claims

Assistant boss Graeme Jones has hit back at Histon's claims that Swansea City pressurised the officials into postponing Saturday's FA Cup game.

Histon chairman Gareth Baldwin said after the postponement:

'The Swansea officials were on their phones to the FA from nine o'clock this morning saying the pitch was not safe.'

'I spoke to the referee on the telephone at 0930, and he said that Swansea were already in Cambridge, so there was no issue - so let's get the game on.'

'But when he arrived, he had the assistant manager of Swansea and a number of their staff in his earhole, saying the pitch was not fit.'

'Swansea didn't want to play it, there's no question about that.'

'They were saying it is not safe and not playable but you can see it's already got a bit of give in the surface.'

Graeme Jones denied any of these claims that the Swans wanted the game off, saying:

'It was the last thing we wanted.''

'I was at the ground at 9am with (physio) Richie Evans and the only people we saw were the groundsman and their physio,'

'I was back at the team hotel by 9.30am. When the referee arrived to do his pitch inspection at 11.30am, the only representatives of Swansea City who were at the ground were Richie and our kit manager Sue Eames, who would always be at an away ground at that time.

'I can assure you that the last thing we wanted was to see the game called off.

'We wanted the game played 100 per cent, but the fact is that the pitch has to be playable.

'There is a health and safety issue here and the referee made the decision that the pitch wasn't safe.'

The accusations made by the Histon chairman will surely spice up the encounter, now to be played on Tuesday January 13th.
