'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Simply Not Good Enough, Slams Martinez

Swans gaffer Roberto Martinez has shouldered the blame for his side's disappointing League Cup exit at the hands of Watford this evening.

El Gaffer made eight changes to the side that saw off the Hornets on Sunday, and it proved his undoing as the host's struggled for the fluidity that has seen them be a hit in the Championship so far this campaign.

Martinez told BBC Sport:

'We got heavily punished as our performance wasn't as good as we can be.

'I don't think Watford did too much to win but I have no complaints, our performance wasn't good enough.

'I don't like to blame individuals, I will take the blame. The goal we conceded is three mistakes in one action and it's not like us.'

Watford caretaker boss Malky Mackay was understandably delighted as his side became the first to leave the Liberty victorious this season.

Speaking to BBC Sport, he said:

'We wanted to make sure we got through tonight.

'It is a great confidence booster for the lads to be in the quarter-final. It's something the players needed to happen tonight.

'They've worked immensely hard over the last four days.

'We showed tonight that we don't give away sloppy goals and that's the key to turning the ship around.'

The Swans have the opportunity to bounce back on Saturday when they travel to Carrow Road to take on Norwich City.
