Konstantopoulos Explains Penalty Save Success

Goalkeeper Dimi Konstantopoulos, on loan from Coventry City, explains the success he has had with saving penalties, and how it's become his speciality.

The Greek made a spot kick save at Doncaster on Saturday with just 4 minutes remaining to keep the scores level at 0-0.

It was hardly his first though, as he tells the Evening Post how one season he saved 4 out of 6:

'My record is pretty good with penalties ? I saved four out of six in one season at Hartlepool ? so I guess that's my speciality,'

'But there's no secret to it. The instructions I had for the penalty were for Brian Stock, who had gone off, so I was trying to check the name on Paul Heffernan's shirt before he took it.

'I had not seen him take a penalty before but from the shape he was in as he took the penalty I thought he was going to blast it.

'Usually, if they are right-footed and they are blasting it, it goes to your right.

'It was the last few minutes of the game and players don't usually try to place penalties when they come that late on. They usually try to put power behind them and luckily I guessed the right way.'

'It's the best feeling for a goalkeeper to save a penalty and keep a clean sheet and it's nice for me to be back out there playing again,' he added.

'The lads in front of me battled hard in what wasn't really our style of game. It wasn't a great game but overall we have to be pleased with a point away from home.'

His penalty saves record is quite a contrast to that of Swansea's number 1 goalkeeper Dorus De Vries, who is yet to make a spot-kick save since joining the club.
