Williams Out To Atone For Welsh Moscow Defeat

Swansea City defender Ashley Williams is on the lookout to atone for the costly mistake that denied Wales a point in Russia last month.

Whilst the majority of his team mates will be working hard back in Wales the defender is off on his travels with John Toshack's Welsh squad that could include colleague Owain Tudur Jones. Toshack's side came under fire from supporters following a lackluster win against lowly Azerbaijan at the Millennium Stadium and were spared their blushes by a scrappy goal by Wolverhampton striker Sam Vokes on 83 minutes.

However a trip to a frosty Lokomotiv Stadium in Moscow where Wales faced Russia was to break Welsh hearts. Tottenham Hotspur's new acquisition Roman Pavlyuchenko put the Russians ahead but a 67th minute strike by Cardiff City's Joe Ledly put the visitors back on terms but a mistake by Williams let in Zénith St-Petersburg striker Pavel Pogrebniak to fire past Wayne Hennessey and steel all three points for Guus Hiddink's side.Williams has admitted the mistake has not played on his mind but is firmly out to redress the balance caused by his error.

Making his Wales debut this year in the 2-0 win over Luxembourg at the Stade Josy Barthel the 24 year old has become indispensable to Wales and with a tricky game at home to Liechtenstein next week and a mammoth task of overhauling a German side packed to the rafters with top flight stars; The Tamworth born player will be hoping to draw on his experience gained with Swansea City and Wales and get a result against two polar oppositions.

Williams Told The WM:

'It was 10 minutes from being a great result.Even though we had played so well, to lose it like that was a big disappointment.I watched the game again when I got back home and another half an inch and that ball would have been cleared. I thought I was a bit unfortunate because I was on my heels going backwards and had to change direction quickly to get something on it - when I did it just went straight to the striker.'

"You have to say, if I`d hit that another five times it would have gone anywhere but to him every time.It was one of those things, and although it hasn`t played on my mind, I`ve been looking forward to getting back with Wales for these games to try and put things right as a team by getting some more points on board.I`ve been happy with my form for Swansea and I`ve felt more confident with every game.'

"I think I`ve showed what I`m about but I`ve been trying to improve every time and command a little more, building on some of the levels I`ve been reaching. And I`m sure playing for Wales has helped me with that, just as much as I feel playing in the Championship with Swansea has helped me playing for Wales. All I can do now is keep on doing what I`ve been doing while still looking to improve and just train as hard as ever.

I think Williams and Monk are complementing eac other quite well and are too very competent centre backs. My only concern with both of them is their lack of pace. The quality strikers that play in the championship are often very pacey and may cause us problems :s
