Former Swansea City defender Sam Ricketts has backed his former club to cause a cup upset in this seasons Carling cup competition.
Speaking after the Swans 1-0 win over arch rivals Cardiff City , the Welsh international heaped praise on his former employers for their fine second round performance against Hull City which saw the Liberty Stadium club run out 2-1 winners after extra time.
Ricketts also believes that if the draw is kind to Swansea there is no reason why Roberto Martinez's side could not make the final at Wembley next year.
Ricketts Told The SWEP
| "I don't think anyone will fancy coming down here.Swansea had a good win against Hull and I was impressed with the way they played against Cardiff. They knocked the ball around well, deserved to win and could have done it by a couple more goals. If Swansea want to take the competition seriously, I think they could go a long way in it this season. You look at what Cardiff did in the FA Cup last season and I don't see any reason why Swansea shouldn't do something similar this year if the draw is "The Hull lads commented on what a great ground the Liberty is and that sort of thing, but they also said Swansea played some good football and have some good players.' 'They were surprised to find out that it was pretty much a reserve side they were up against.Swansea are starting to get a good reputation in the game. People are starting to talk about the club and the players down here. That's great because it shows the club are doing well, although it can have a downside if clubs start coming in for some of the players. It's great to come back and see the difference.Swansea are playing some really good football and have a nice mix with the Spanish lads. And people like Garry Monk and Leon Britton, who are the backbone of the side." |
