Swansea City manager Roberto Martinez is in a race against time to add an experienced keeper to the ranks as the transfer deadline looms.
Over the last few weeks there has been a growing concern by the Liberty Stadium faithful over the lack of cover for Dorus De Vries. Martinez over the summer released David Knight after just one appearance for the club last term the former Middlesbrough shot-stopper was told he was surplus to requirements. Turning to the clubs youth system David Cornell was put firmly in the frame to become the clubs no 2 keeper but and untimely wrist injury has forced the youngster out of action for up to four months.
Swansea's keeper crisis has even led to Head of Youth Development Tony Pennock registering as a player should De Vries sustain an injury and to be able to play in the reserves. In the 4-0 loss to Cheltenham Town in the reserves the club trialed a young keeper Ben Hopkins. What is clear, Martinez will not break the bank in order to shore up his options but has indicated he will find a shot-stopper that does meet his high requirements.
Martinez Told The SWEP:
|'It's quite clear that we need to bring a goalkeeper in.We should make sure we get him before the transfer deadline. It's not easy - we can't just go into the market and spend money so we are limited as to where we can look.Whether it's a loan or a permanent signing, we will find the person who is right for what we want.|
We need a body for the dynamics of the group every day. We were counting on David Cornell a little bit, but his injury has changed things. There are many players I could mention who we will be following closely over the next three or four weeks. There are probably 10 we are keeping an eye on in positions that could help us, players with Championship background and Championship status.
Having said that, the players we already have are making it very hard for anyone who might be coming in because of their high standards. The better they perform, the harder it is for us to find players who could take us up a level.'
