Martinez Bemoans Poor Defence

Martinez Bemoans Poor Defence

Swans boss Roberto Martinez has expressed his disappointment with the 2-0 loss to Charlton Athletic and has declared the two goals conceded as soft.

The clubs first game back in the second teir of British football could not have started more badly as Charlton who are tipped for promotion secured an early lead on three minutes. Mark Hundson buried the ball past Dorus De Vries after latching onto a Jonjo Shelvey corner and with it threw Martinez's plans firmly out of kilt. Swansea did mount a comeback with Spaniard Guillem Bauza having the best chance to equalize for the Swans after Marcos Painter's cross.

It would be an untimely sending off that would end Swansea's valiant fightback when for the first time in his career Garry Monk was sent off , after his second bookable offence. The sucker punch from Charlton came soon after Andy Grey's flying header had De Vries in the Swansea goal well beaten.Despite this loss Roberto Martinez has remained upbeat about the performance that deserved so much more.

Martinez Told The BBC:

"The goals we conceded were not good enough from our point of view. They were soft. We wouldn't have won the Championship last season if we had defended like that. But there are more positives than negatives. The second yellow card was a bad decision.Keeping the ball and creating chances are the hardest things in football and we did that so I'm not concerned about conceding goals from set-pieces.That is easy to sort out. It is just concentration so we will iron that out. When you are strong in the game you have to score and they scored twice despite not being on top at any stage. That is a great skill to have but we will make sure that we will be competitive in our next game."

Swansea City have the chance to bounce back against Brentford in the first round of the Carling cup on tuesday.
