Martinez Predicting Tough Charlton Test

Swansea City this afternoon will finally take their championship bow against Charlton Athletic, but Roberto Martinez has predicted a tough opening test.

After sweeping the opposition last season in league one aside with consummate ease , Martinez and his young squad will face sterner tests this season and with the influx of relegated premiership clubs with lucrative parachute payments for competition a long hard season lays ahead. Despite this many a pundit and manager have predicted that the Swans will have enough to not be embroiled in a relegation dog fight.

Under no illusions Martinez has urged fans to be patient whilst the squad learn to adapt to the new division but insists the standard of opposition will improve the squad.

Martinez Told The WM:

"This sort of test is the best way to start our season. We will get a lot of teams like Charlton this season. They are a team that hasn`t been outside the Premiership for long, so it`s going to be a huge test. They are very strong at home and, as a football club, they are better than Championship level.

It`s a difficult start, but, for one reason or another, every team in this division is going to be tough. It`s more about how we adapt and gel as a squad anyway. We know it`s going to be a very strong competition. But we are looking forward to it because it`s going to improve us as a squad and as individuals. We will need time to adapt, but overall it`s about staying strong with what we do best.I don`t think it`s in our make-up to play defensively and we don`t have the players to do it.We still have to adapt to a new division. But, with the quality we have got, we hope it`s going to be quicker than anyone would expect from the outside."

Vital Swansea will be running a match update service and chat room this afternoon.
