Martinez: Soutar Has Championship Ambition

Roberto Martinez has reveled that keeper Derek Soutar, who is on trial with the club has the ambition to play in the championship.

Martinez faces the prospect of going to the Valley on Saturday next week without the luxury of a back up keeper. Youth team keeper David Cornell who traveled with the squad on the pre season tour of Spain has been ruled out for four months due to a wrist injury. It now leaves the Spaniard in a hunt to sign a new goalkeeper as back up to Dorus De Vries.

Soutar was released by SPL side Aberdeen after the Dons told the Scot he was surplus to requirements. The 6ft shot stopper has had an unsuccessful trial with league one club Hartlepool United. Soutar will be hoping that he has impress Martinez and earn a contract. However he failed to impress in the second half against Chester City on Thursday and the former Alloa Athletic conceded two goals in quick succession.

Martinez Told The SWEP:

'We've had some very good reports on Derek from Scotland and he has a huge desire to come down and play his football in the Championship.'

Tickets will be available on the gate for Kristian O Leary's testimonial, cash only.

ambition doesnt mean much if he hasnt got the ability to go with it.

I think conceeding those two goals has probably cost him his chance with us but then again we need cover for Dorus so it may be a case of the better of two evils for RM!
