Despite the disappointing 4-0 defeat last night, Swansea City manager Roberto Martinez seemed pleased with his squad's exercise.
The Spaniard also said how his squad are ahead of where they were this time last year when we started our pre-season campaign with a defeat against Dutch side Telstar.
Martinez told swanseacity.net:
| "We are further ahead in terms of preparation and quality than we were against Telstar. Yes, the result was disappointing against Espanyol, but it's not about results at this stage of the season. As far as the exercise goes, it was exactly what we wanted. It was a fantastic test, something you need if you are going to keep improving as a squad. Espanyol paid us a compliment in the first half by putting their stronger team out because they expected a tough encounter. I don't think we disappointed them. In the first half we were face to face with them; I thought we had more possession and made better use of the ball. Jordi Gomez was through one on one early on only to be brought down. In a normal game the lad would have been sent-off. But although we had good chances in the second-half through Tom Butler and Shaun MacDonald, when we went 2-0 down we let the result affect our performance. We conceded two sloppy goals after that and we need to learn from it. But we are getting better as a squad every day. The new lads are settling in well and you can see them on a daily basis starting to be themselves. Now we need to look at the Espanyol performance; step up a level and realise we've still got a lot of hard work to do, but in a positive way." |
