Lessons To Be Learnt In Defence

Swansea City manager Roberto Martinez said his side have defensive lessons to learn after our 4-0 defeat in last night's friendly against Espanyol.

by headingleyjack
'Having seen Tate and Lawrence is it any real surprise we conceded three in the second half.'
The Swans' boss fielded two different sides in each half and the stronger one in the first matched Espanyol and were unlucky to go a goal down 7 minutes before the break.

Martinez was disappointed to see his side concede 4 soft goals and he told the Evening Post:

''It doesn't matter whether you are Premier League team or a La Liga team, you don't want to concede goals,''

''Espanyol have great talent, but we cannot be happy with the goals we conceded. They were very soft goals and that shows we need to get together and keep working hard.

''But this is exactly the test we needed. We are going into a league where there is going to be a step up in quality and in the kind of football we need to play, and this was a great test for us ahead of that.''

''There were many positives to come from the Espanyol game and I'm pleased with the exercise overall,''

''The last thing that counts in pre-season is the result, but we need to have that winning mentality in every game and we need to try to be as good as we can in every game over the next few days.

''That's how you get up to speed for the Championship.''

The Spaniard will be hoping to get a much better result tonight when we face CF Peralada. Vital Swansea will be providing a chat room and live updates during the match.
