Swansea Youth Structure Set For Overhaul

Swansea Youth Structure Set For Overhaul

Swansea City chairman Huw Jenkins has announced plans to overhaul the clubs much criticised youth system.

Setting the tone on the future of fringe reserve team players like Strikers Kerry Morgan and Chris Jones, Jenkins believes that the key to the development of these players is first team football within the league of Wales structure. Swansea have used the system before with Morgan and Chad Bond sent on loan to Port Talbot whilst links with Swedish club Östersund and Spanish club CF Balaguer have also been utilised in order to give younger players a chance to develop.

Taking the helm after the controversial departure of David Moss as Head of youth development, former Goalkeeping coach Tony Pennock has outlined his vision of bringing more players through the youth system who are capable of making an impact in the first team. Swansea have taken up the challenge in order for Pennock's vision to turn into reality. Whilst clubs are disbanding their reserve teams in record number the Liberty Stadium club will retain the reserve team and have put an extra layer into the system to allow players to gain vital experience with local clubs.

Jenkins Told The SWEP:

"While many sides are disbanding their reserve sides - Cardiff City are one of them - we have put in another tier for our younger players. It's a vital step for them. That is why Premier League teams send their youngsters out on loan throughout the Football League. It also builds relationships, and that is important. We can send our talented young players out to the likes of Llanelli, Port Talbot and Neath Athletic knowing that they would be involved in a competitive environment in the Welsh Premier League. It works for all parties concerned. We reap the benefits of the player in question getting some quality game-time while the player and the club benefit from his involvement. We now have Tony Pennock in charge of our youth and that's a great signing for not only Swansea City but also the up-and-coming youngsters in the area. Alan Curtis is also heavily involved with the youth and that's a great combination to have."

Tickets for Kristian O Leary's testimonial game against premiership new boys West Bromwich Albion on August 2nd will be on sale from Monday. Only the West and East stands will be open which means Season Ticket holders are NOT guaranteed their seats. Tickets cost £15 for adults and £7.50 for concessions (full time student, senior citizens, disabled and children under-16). Family deals are available and for £25 for one adult and two children can take in the game whilst £40 will cover two adults and two children.
