Amankwaah Joins Swindon On Free Transfer

Out of contract defender Kevin Amankwaah has joined leauge one outfit Swindon Town on a free transfer.

Amankwaah who is of Ghanaian decent becomes the third player to leave the club this summer after the departures of Andy Robinson to Leeds United and Kevin Austin who joined League Two Chesterfield.

Since his £250,000 arrival from Yeovil Town in 2006 the defender has failed to hold down a starting place in the Swansea City side. This season the former Bristol City player has only made 4 appearances in the first team and has struggled to shine in the reserves.

Swindon manager Maurice Malpas did hope that the deal would be finalized before the defender headed off on holiday.

Malpas Told The Swindon Advertiser:

"Everything is on track as far as we are concerned with Kevin. He just needs to tie things up with Swansea now. He goes away on holiday later this week and I would like to think we would get everything done before that. I want to get it done in the next couple of days so it can be announced. I am always reluctant to say a deal is done before it is signed because anything could happen. It would be a huge relief to get it finally sorted before he goes away."

The former Yeovil Town player has expressed his regret at leaving Swansea City but declared he could not sit in the stands next season and wanted to secure first team football with Swindon. Relishing his new challenge with The Robins, the defender is hoping he can be a part of something special at his new club.

Amankwaah Spoke on Swindon's official site:

"I'm obviously sad to leave Swansea, but both myself and the manager (Roberto Martinez) felt it was in the best interest of both parties that I had a new challenge.

My first team chances were limited last season and I didn't want the same thing to happen again next season. I could have sat in the stand and just picked up my wages, but I want to play football."

I came to Swansea looking to play, but although I made quite a few appearances in my first season it just hasn't worked out. Every player gets a blip in their career and I hope I can find my best form again at Swindon. I feel I am going to a good club. They are looking to build something special there and hopefully I can play a big part."

Existing season ticket holders have until close of business on the 14th June to retain their seats for next season.

I think he was an expensive panic buy and he is an expensive mistake. Lets make sure the club doesn't make mistakes like this again.
