Williams Agrees To £400,000 Swansea Move

Swansea City have broken their transfer fee record by signing Stockport County defender Ashley Williams for £400,000.

Signing on for two years with the possibility an year extension when he makes the required amount of appearances, Williams becomes the most expensive player in the clubs history and surpasses Colin Irwin's long standing record.

The Welsh international had featured in the run in to the end of the season and was in the starting eleven that secured the vital three points that secured promotion to the Championship, beating Gillingham 2-1.

Highly rated by the Stockport club , his move will come as a huge blow to the the league two club who are in play off final.

Williams has made his international début this year, facing Luxembourg.Securing championship football for the 2008/09 season has capped off a truly remarkable three months for the Tamworth born defender.

I respect Martinez's judgement. For a player who was excellent in Division 2 in March and 5 months later, jump 2 divisions into the championship is a dream for him but a big gamble by the club. CB was a problem position for us last season, so I am hopeful that Ashley Williams will be the "rock" we need.

£400,000 isn't an upfront fee, it includes all add ons. Lets hope he's a good little signing.
