Champagne corks in the city will be popping this evening after Swansea City were crowned as league one champions despite a 2-1 loss at home against Yeovil this afternoon.
Swansea did have to rely on results elsewhere and thanks courtesy to a 90th minute strike from Lee Barnard consigned second placed Carlisle United to a rare defeat at home and in a stroke handed The Liberty Stadium outfit the title.
The champions elect were shell shocked on 24 minutes when Marvin Williams got the better of Kevin Austin near the touchline to fire in a cross , no one in a white shirt could clear the danger but Glovers veteran Terry Skiverton headed home at close range to send the 300 plus Yeovil fans into rapturous applause.
Things went from bad to worse for the home side on 59 minutes as Aiden Downes from just outside the Swansea penalty area dispatched a shot low past Dorus De Vries.
The bumper crowd at the Liberty Stadium had something to shout about on 79 minutes when Andy Robinson who handed the league one leaders a lifeline when he picked up a loose ball in the box to fire past Steve Mildenhall in the Yeovil goal..
Roberto Martinez despite the loss has praised his players, staff and the fans for their part in the championship story and the former Wigan player also believes the Championship is where the club deserve to be.
Martinez told Sky Sports:
| "It means a lot you know 24 years to get to try and get to this level of football and to do it winning the title is a special achievement and its down to the players and the staff ,have been working really hard and above everything the fans. Five years ago we were fighting to avoid relegation and now we are here where Swansea city belongs its a special day. |
