Martinez To Get His Just Rewards

Martinez To Get His Just Rewards

Swansea City manager Roberto Martinez will get his just rewards with the news that Huw Jenkins is planning to reward the Spaniard with a contract extension and improved terms.

For his first full season in management the former Wigan player has defied the odds to steer Swansea City to promotion to the Championship. Just five seasons ago as a player Martinez was part of the Squad that narrowly avoided going out of the football league thanks to a hat trick from Jason Thomas and a Second half strike by Lenny Johnrose.

Five years, a play off final defeat, two FAW Premier Cup's, one league cup and two promotions later Martinez has been through it all with Swansea City. In 2006 the Catalan left the club in acrimonious circumstances after then manager Kenny Jackett released him. It did not prevent Martinez from hanging up his boots entirely and the call came from Chester City.

Making 31 appearances and scoring three goals for the club settling directly on the English/Welsh border, the tactician left the club to take the reigns at Swansea after Kenny Jackett's departure from the Liberty Stadium.

Swansea Chairman Huw Jenkins has given Martinez a glowing appraisal after the club secured promotion on Saturday with a 2-1 win over Gillingham. Jenkins has confirmed that Martinez will be rewarded for his efforts in the past 14 months.

Jenkins told the SWEP:

''Naturally we want to reward Roberto for the job he's done and to make sure that he is with us for a long time to come.'

When you make decisions in football they often don`t work out, but we always felt Roberto was the right man to come in when Kenny left. The fact that we`ve been proved right means a mixture of satisfaction and relief.'

'We have never been afraid to make brave decisions, and we felt Roberto would get the best out of our players and that his football philosophy was what we wanted to see at Swansea. He gave up playing to take over, so I am pleased for him that things have worked out.'

'Roberto has never let me down in his commitment or his desire to work. He works extremely hard and that`s a key ingredient when you`re looking for someone to take your club forward. He has also shown he knows which players to bring in and, you consider all that, I don?t think we could have picked a better person to be our manager.'

Swansea City reserves will be in action this evening as they take on Forest Green Rovers. Tickets cost £3 and free car parking is available.
