Martinez Plans To Strengthen Squad

Swansea City manager Roberto Martinez has told the South Wales Evening Post about his plans to strengthen his squad for next season.

The Swans have confirmed automatic promotion to the Championship with a 2-1 away win at Gillingham and Roberto says there'll be ins and outs during the Summer.

Martinez said:

'Whatever division we were in, my aim would have been to improve the squad this summer and that's what we'll do,'

'More or less everything is where I want it to be. The majority of the players who are out of contract have now been sorted and we will be able to release news on them very soon.

'We're concentrating on the squad we've got and then looking to improve certain aspects of it.

'We need to keep that group together. Look at the average age. Most of them are in their mid-20s and they could play together for another three or four years.

'That's a huge strength and it's important that we keep progressing together.'

'There are areas where we need to improve and we will do that by bringing in new players.

'In any season certain players don't play much football and they need to move on to a new challenge.

'We will then bring in others who will provide a lot of competition for those who have played this year. In football that's a natural transition.

'There is a big gap between League One and the Championship, but with some improvements to our squad and the attitude we've shown this season, we'll be fine.'

The Spaniard won't have a large transfer kitty though to spend on players, although judging from his bargain buys last Summer he won't need it.

Chairman Huw Jenkins has said the club won't be splashing the cash and the only big fee to be spent with £350,000 on Stockport County defender Ashley Williams.

Good that the club are not resting on their laurels but are also not willing to break the bank. It is therefore important we have a manager who can work on a tight budget and that is exactly what we have. I think we have 4 who will leave and he'll look to bring in 5.
