'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Martinez Reaction On Promotion

Jubilant Swansea City manager has declared that the club have gone up in style after the 2-1 win over Gillingham this afternoon. In the process the victory handed the club a place in the 2nd tier of the football leauge for the first time in 24 years.

In a nervy encounter at the Priestfeild Stadium Swansea booked their place in the Championship next season courtesy of a Guillem Bauza brace just before half time. Bauza's double cancelled out Dennis Oli's 22nd minute opener.

Gillingham manager Mark Stimson was out to spoil the promotion party but his side who now face certain relegation could not scupper Swansea's party.

Roberto Martinez has hailed his players following the final whistle and has called for everyone who is attached to the club to feel proud of their achievements. The Spaniard has also proclaimed that some of the football the squad have played this season will go down in club history.

Attentions will focused on next Saturday's fixture against Yeovil Town which if Swansea City should win not only will promotion be achieved but the leauge title to boot.

Roberto Martinez said:

'It's been a very enjoyable campaign - we said right at the start that League One is a very hard division to play in when you have the likes of Nottingham Forest and Leeds to play against.

"Everybody at Swansea City should be very proud about promotion - we worked very hard to get it and we did it in style.

'If you only play pretty football you will end up as a mid table side - you can only do that on certain occasions or certain days. We succeed because we are strong, determined and hungry for success.

"We went one goal behind but we kept the same mentality and once we got the two goals we understood what was needed to ensure we won the game, it was a very good performance in different ways."

"We have shown this season that we have got different dimensions in our play without having to use the percentage game and I think that is the way the Swansea fans would like it to be. Some of the football we played this season has been special and I am sure will be remembered for the rest of our history.

"We've got three games left - it's been 24 years waiting for this moment - and the fans should enjoy it but we now have an opportunity to win the title and we will give it everything that we have got.

'But promotion was the most important aim and we have moved the football club to the next level."

Despite not being everyone's choice for taking over the manager's job from Kenny Jackett, Martinez has proved the doubters wrong, winning promotion in his first ever season as a manager.

The Spaniard will go down in history for delivering 2nd Division football for the first time in 24 years and we all look forward to hopefully another successful season next year.

Fans will now be flocking to get tickets for now what should be a party atmosphere in the last two home games of the season against Yeovil Town and Leyton Orient

Roberto - That was GUAPA!
