Rangel Set To Miss Gillingham Clash

Swansea City defender Angel Rangel is set to miss Saturday's crunch game away to Gillingham with a groin strain.

The Spaniard was sidelined in the thrilling 0-0 draw against Carlisle United on Tuesday. Rangel up to the midweek fixture against the Cumbrians had played a part in every game for the club so far this season.

As the season comes to an end it is not surprising that the rigours of this season have finally taken their toll on the former Terresa player.

Swans manager Roberto Martinez has been speaking about loosing his fellow countryman at such a pivotal point in the season. He revelled that Rangel was more than willing to play his part at Brunton Park but his body just would not let him

New signing Ashley Williams on loan from Leauge Two side Stockport County was signalled out for praise by Roberto Martinez. Williams making his Swansea début in the heart of the defense took his opportunity well according to the tactician. Critical of the approach by Carlisle United Martinez has come out fighting suggesting that their nearest challengers wanted to create a intimidating atmosphere.

Martinez Spoke To The SWEP:

'You've got to remember that Angel was the only outfield player to have played every game and that throughout his career he has been used to playing 30 or 32 games a yeaR.'

'Angel felt his groin and we decided quite late to pull him out. All of a sudden there are bigger demands on him compared to the rest of his career and, while he wanted to be available, sometimes the body tells you enough is enough.

'We will see how Angel feels over the next couple of days, but we knew had Ashley Williams to step in on Tuesday and I thought he took his opportunity very well.I think they tried to create an intimidating atmosphere and that was disappointing. From the start they wanted to be in our faces, but there's a big difference between doing that and some of the challenges we had to suffer. But we'll take it as a compliment that a team who are chasing us need to be that physical.'

'We know teams are looking at Swansea City and thinking they have to stop us, and sometimes these things come along with that.'

Swansea City could be promoted tomorrow evening should Swindon Town win over third placed Doncaster Rovers.Failing that a win over relegation threatened Gillingham on Saturday would seal promotion.
