Tate: Criticising Defence Is Stupid

Stand in Swansea City captain Alan Tate has hit out against those who criticise the defence, declaring there comments as 'stupid.'

Lawrence and Tate in recent months have on the receiving end of a lot of criticism for their performances at the back. The most recent was the poor first half performance against Bristol Rovers.

"I think he needs to apologise for the defending not call us all "stupid".
The Gas found themselves 2-0 up in the first half and it could have been so much more as every time they attacked they looked like scoring.

The first was a goal that came through a defensive mix up when Trinidad defender Dennis Lawrence failed to deal with a loose ball. Quick to recover from Lawrence's mistake, Tate went flying in with a sliding tackle but Lambert was able to strike the ball home.

Rovers second was to heap more pressure on a Swansea side teetering on the brink as the home side were caught out again. Lawrence, poorly positioned, let Craig Disley in but in truth Angle Rangel kept Disley onside as the former Mansfield Town striker went clear through on goal to slot the ball home past De Vries.

Despite these glaring mistakes, Tate says it's stupid to criticise the defence, he told the Evening Post:

"People who criticise the defence for conceding goals are just stupid,"

"The team concedes goals. It does not say the Swansea defence are 1-0 down, does it? The same way it does not say the Swansea attack are 1-0 up. People who see it like that are just nit-picking.

"And no-one was complaining about me and Dennis when we beat Bristol Rovers 2-0. You are going to concede goals, you just can`t stop everything. It is part and parcel of the game. It is a team game, you win together and you lose together."

Tate is wrong there in some ways and right in others. No one was complaining in the 2-0 win Alan, but many fans were when Rovers played us at the Liberty.

We made far too many mistakes and we were lucky it wasn't 4-0 we were trailing at half time.

He was to blame for their first goal, rather than staying on his feet he lunged in on the edge of the box, he didn't win the ball and Lambert scored.

I agree with him though that it's not always the defence who's at fault (although they usually are).Sometimes the midfield fail to win the ball or concede in dangerous positions.

Is Tate beginning to realise he'll lose his place again with the arrival of Ashley Williams?

I think he's talking a load of codswallop. Our defence has been shambolic at times. Its been our biggest threat to promotion.

I agree with you, individual errors at the back have cost us recently.
