For 45 first half minutes Bristol Rovers looked set to dent Swansea City's title push , but Jason Scotland had other ideas after scoring a second half brace to earn a point for The South Wales side.
Severely criticised in recent months League One's top scorer with 27 goals in all competitions has began to show the kind of form that Roberto Martinez signed him on from Scottish outfit St Johnstone in the summer.
Swansea fell behind with 14 miniutes gone when Ricky Lambert evaded two challenges from Dennis Lawrence and Alan Tate to fire low past Dorus De Vries . Rovers pressing for a second goal got there rewards on 36 minutes when Stuart Campell timed his pass to Craig Disley to perfection to see the Striker clean through on goal. One on One with De Vries, Disley coolly placed his shot past the helpless Dutchman.
Roberto Martinez's side came out fighting and within 5 minutes Jason Scotland gave Swansea hope of closing the two goal deficit. Andy Robinson wide on the left found Leon Britton who unleashed a stinging shot on Steve Phillips goal. The Rovers keeper saved the initial effort but could not push the ball away from the penalty area. First to the ball was Scotland who had all the time in the world to settle the ball to feet and send a low drive past the congested Rovers defence and into the Rovers goal.
Rampant Swansea looked to get back on terms laying seige to the Bristol goal and their just rewards came with 6 minutes left on the clock. Scotland driving into space just inside the Rovers box had the time and space to send a curling shot into the top left hand corner to send 15,000 supporters into raptures.
Martinez despite the draw has criticised his defenders , citing the performance as below standard. He did take time out to praise Jason Scotland for his goal scoring exploits against Rovers.
He Told SWEP:
|"'It was a special goal by a special player. You don't get too many players like him in League One. He caused them all sorts of problems all game.We should have won after having so many chances in the second half but I was happy to take a point in the end. We made a poor start and they could have been out of sight by half time."|
Our defending was below our standards and every time they went forward I thought they would score. We regrouped at half-time and in the end they were hanging on.'
