O Leary: Defensive Role A Test

O Leary: Defensive Role A Test

Veteran Swansea midfielder Kristian O Leary has admitted that his defensive role in the 1-0 win over Huddersfield was a huge challenge.

Recent weeks have seen Roberto Martinez's squad being decimated by defensive injuries.Dennis Lawrence was the first of those players heading for Richie Evans treatment room as the Trinidadian was stretchered off in the 2-2 draw against Crewe on the 9th February

Injury woes did not end there with Marcos Painter out for three weeks with a Hamstring tear. These injury lay-off's had forced Martinez to draft in O Leary into defence with Captain Garry Monk ruled out of the clash at The Galpharm Stadium, due to a back problem.

Monk is expected to return after Swansea Physio Richie Evans confirmed that after treatment this week, the former Southampton man is set to feature against Millwall.

Despite his short spell in defence Krisian O Leary has admitted his trepidation of his new role.

He Told The SWEP:

'I spoke to the gaffer before the game and he asked me how I felt about playing in central defence.'

I was a bit nervous because I haven't played there a lot lately, maybe once last season and once or twice the season before that.'

You get into a rhythm when you're playing and I haven't been playing that often, and I was coming back in on a ground where we haven't played too well over the years.

It was a test for me, but I said 'Of course' when the gaffer asked me and I think I did all right.'

I prefer playing in central midfield. That's where I've had probably my best spell and there's more to do in that position. But we kept a clean sheet against a Huddersfield side who are a handful.'

The Squad will return from the mid season training camp in Spain on Wednesday.

Maybe he should make that his position, could do with a big lad at the back

hes too slow and vulnerable, would make too many mistakes, thats why he prefers midfield, less pressure.
