Thomas Butler's career with Swansea City looked on the edge in the summer with the signings of Ferrie Bodde and Paul Anderson , not one to give up the fight the Irishman fought back.
Battling on the flank the midfeilder turned in a Man of the Match performance that certainly has the returning Paul Anderson in a fight for his place. Butler's 6th goal of the season has left the former Sunderland man in the frame for the Powerade Player of the month following his excellent performances this month.
Signed from Hartlepool United on a free transfer by former manager Kenny Jackett the midfielder has split fan opinions since his arrival but in recent months fans have found a new appreciation of the combative midfielder.
Swansea looked to be heading for a goalless draw against a Luton Side reduced to ten men after Sol Davis was sent off after picking up his second yellow card of the game; following a rash challenge on Thomas Butler.
Buoyed by a numerical advantage Swansea piled on the pressure and were unlucky not to go 1-0 up following Alan Tate's towering header. It was to be Butler who was to break the deadlock with a low drive shot past Dean Brill.
Roberto Martinez has hailed his midfeilder and has revealed he has set him a 10 goal target for the season.
Martinez told the Evening Post:
| 'Tom Butler is a special player. If you can use him to his strengths, he is a Premiership player playing in League One.' 'I set him a target to get 10 goals this season, and he's not far off now with six. I know that's a lot more than he's ever managed before in a season, but the surprise shouldn't be that he is getting them now, it's that he didn't get them before.' 'If you saw him training you'd see he is one of the best strikers of the ball with either foot. He is very good in one-on-one situations and he's also very good at getting himself into shooting positions.' I think he's probably enjoying his football more than he has before and that is paying dividends.' |
